What the heck is an Adventures in Missions base?
The one in Cambodia looks like Overflow guesthouse in Siem Reap. Will they all be a guesthouse? What’s their purpose?
It’s been a little challenging to share with people the vision of bases, I’ve had trouble understanding the point and purpose of them myself. But during a training meeting here at the Overflow guesthouse in Cambodia, I got a picture of a big old-school boat, ya know, the one with the big sails like Pirates of the Caribbean. Anyway, the boat represents a base and it has it’s own purpose as a vehicle getting from point A to B, blown by the Holy Spirit, and internally there are a lot of deck hands to make that happen.
Firstly, a base is set in a spiritually dark place to bring the light of Christ in a more permanent way than short term trips. Our primary goal is to fulfill the great commission and create an enjoyable experience doing it for our short term trips. In Adventures’ language it’s church planting and enhancing the experience of short term teams. In my words it’s making disciples and having fun doing it.
So, that’s the vehicle of the base, pretty straight forward. Nothing new, but I’ve gotten a better grasp on what I’ll be doing now that I’m actually doing it here at Adventures’ base in Cambodia. Within the ship we’ll have different things happening. David wants to build relationships with local Nepali men by playing soccer, potentially at a high level of play like joining a national team. Jenna wants to educate / empower women to have a job other than offering their bodies to put bread on the table, through her creative / crafting skills the Lord has given her. Ashley has a heart to bring women out of abusive situations and show them their value. Emma is excited to come alongside squads during their journey on the World Race. To plug them into ministry that fits their unique giftings to bring Kingdom. And my role is to love and build relationships with people, both locals and backpackers a like.
All our roles are focused around discipleship and we each have our own vehicles of making that happen through our unique giftings. In a sense, we have a few boats inside of the bigger boat of the base that helps all of these to happen. So, thanks for coming alongside me for the long haul of building this boat with me- together we are doing the thing! 🙂
Oh, and we have hopes that instead of a guesthouse feel, where there are limited places to hangout, that the Nepal base will be like a home where people feel safe to be themselves. Please be praying that the Lord will provide the exact property we need for the base. We have around a year before leadership will be deciding on a specific property. Thanks Team!!
